Here at KJ East one of our favourite projects to carry out is a home extension. With house prices soaring by over 20% alone last year a lot of our customers chose to extend their home opposed to the hassle of moving property.

We took some of our cost saving measures we have learnt in our many years in the business and wrote some of them below on how we try to help our customers make the correct decisions when choosing a home extension over a costly move.

1.   Think Carefully About Where to Invest

Work out where you can spend and where you should save if you’re looking to reduce the cost of your extension. There are plenty of ways to create wow-factor without busting the budget, and investing your time and money into a professional designer and architect may help you reduce your costs overall with clever, effective house extension ideas. Here at KJ East we have been creating beautiful home extensions since 1985 within our family run business so you can rest be rest assured we have all of the in house expertise to assist you in this project.

We can advise you based on your requirements what elements of the extension are really worth the investment and where you can afford to pull back. Whether your extension is for space or to add value we can tailor the build to your requirements from start to finish.

2.   Choose Skylights Over Glass Ceilings

Structural glass accounts for a large portion of the budget in many contemporary glazed extension ideas, however, if you’re smart with how you use glass, you can get all the benefits of lots of glazing while safeguarding your contingency budget.

Designing your roof lighting in a row is a very simple but effective design alternative to a very popular but costly glass ceiling. Skylights also do not require as much structural support in the walls such as steel beams and underpinning.

3.   Weigh up Moving Load-Bearing Walls

You also need to consider how you’re going to open up the rest of the house to the new extension, and if knocking down internal walls or external walls are absolutely necessary.

Structural alterations in a house extension can be common but not necessarily needed especially if budget and costing plays a huge factor in your decision making process to start with your home extension plans. However moving up load bearing walls can add quite a bit to your cost build.

We will always advise you on the best money saving tips to fit into your design and budget requirements but using the existing property as much to your benefit as possible including current doorways into a garden or rear of the property.

This will make huge savings on the costs of any structural steel.
