Lighting can have a really significant impact on the appearance and atmosphere of a room. Simply changing the style of lighting in a particular place, can completely transform the whole vibe of the room. This is great as it allows you to get creative in other ways aside from things like colour schemes, furniture etc. Lighting is great for experimenting and making a room exactly what you want it to be, by creating the right sort of feel, or even making the place feel bigger. Whilst lighting can dramatically change just about anywhere in your house, one room that is really interesting for experimenting with different kinds of lighting, is the kitchen.

We thought we would share with you some ideas on different kinds of lighting you can have in your kitchen, and how this can change the look and feel of the room.

Cabinet and under-cabinet lighting

One of the reasons that kitchen lighting is sometimes tricky, is because of all the things like cabinets, shelves and cupboards around the room, that make it difficult to light the whole area successfully, as these things block light as well as create a lot of shadows. However, one way you can tackle this and actually improve the overall appearance, is by getting under-cabinet lighting. This really opens up the room as it leaves no area unlit and highlights every part of the kitchen.

Aswell as this, a more modern type of lighting, is cabinet lighting. Perhaps you have some cabinets with glass doors on them so that you can see what is inside, which may be used to put things on display. Having lights inside these will really modernise your kitchen and help show off all that you have on display.

Island lighting

Having a kitchen island is something that is becoming more and more popular. Although you are adding something extra to the room, having an island actually really opens up your kitchen and makes it feel a lot bigger. The key to completing this look, is having the perfect lighting. Having great lighting to accompany your kitchen island really draws attention to it and highlights it, making it a focal point of the room. Not only this, but a lot of people opt for hanging or pendant lights, which create quite a statement in themselves. Furthermore, strong lighting over your kitchen island is handy as you may use this area to dine with friends and family.

Spotlights

It is probably fair to say that spotlights are up there with the most popular type of kitchen lighting. They are great for distributing a lot of light around the room, and they work well with all designs and colour schemes. Sometimes less is more, and although spotlights may be quite simple, they certainly enhance the atmosphere in your kitchen. Furthermore, they are very affordable and easy to replace.

Pendant lighting

If you are going for more of a modern and slick look in your kitchen, pendant lights will complement this perfectly. We briefly mentioned pendant lighting being used over kitchen islands, which is where they are most suited, as they need to be over some kind of surface due to the fact they hang very low. Pendant lighting creates a really contemporary vibe to your kitchen. Furthermore, you can get some very interesting styles of pendant lighting, so you can really use this as a feature to switch up the design and make it more visually impressive.

Chandeliers

Chandeliers are an age old style of lighting, however you can now get some really modern and contemporary designs. The great thing about chandeliers is that no matter what environment they are situated in, they always stand out and become a focal point, as they look so stunning and traditional. They almost give your kitchen an upgrade with an added touch of luxury.
